조동사(助動詞)

동사에 대한 맹세

나 조동사는 동사의 무궁한 영광을 위하여 몸과 마음을 바쳐 충성을 다할 것을 굳게 다짐합니다.

조동사(助動詞)에서 '조(助)'는 도와준다는 의미인데, 조동사는 (본)동사가 없으면

외톨이가 되어서 도저히 험한 세상을 살아갈 수가 없다.

조동사는 위의 맹세와 같이 몸과 마음을 바쳐 본동사를 도와서 부정문이나 의문문을 만들게 되며, 문장 전체의 뜻을 강조하기도 한다.

조동사의 대표주자 Do를 살펴보면;

I study English hard.

You study English hard.

Tarzan studies English hard.

Jane studied English hard.

i) 위와 같은 평서문에서는 조동사는 불필요하다. 일반동사만으로도 그 뜻을 충분히 나타낼 수 있기 때문이다.

그렇지만 위의 문장을 부정문이나 의문문으로 만들기 위해서는 조(助)동사 do(does, did)의 원조(助)를 받아야 한다.

I don't(= do not) study English hard.

You don't(= do not) study English hard.

Tarzan doesn't(= does not) study English hard.

Jane didn't(= did not) study English hard.

Do I study English hard? (이런 문장은 잘 안 쓰이겠죠? 자기가 자기에게 질문하는 경우는 별로 없으니까······.

설명을 위해서 써 놓았으니까 크게 신경 쓰지는 마세요!)

Does Tarzan study English hard?

Did Jane study English hard?

ii) 다음은 문장의 뜻을 강조해주는 용법!

I do remember what you did last summer.(= I remember what you did last summer.)

(나는 네가 지난여름에 한 일을 정말로 기억하고 있다.)

Tarzan does study English hard.(= Tarzan studies English hard.)

(Tarzan은 정말로 영어를 열심히 공부한다.)

Tarzan did love Jane.(= Tarzan loved Jane.)

(Tarzan은 Jane을 정말로 사랑했다.)

이상에서 살펴본 것처럼 조동사 do(does, did)는 별 의미 없이 본(本)동사와 결합해서 의문문, 부정문, 강조문을 만든다.

이 밖에도 조동사 do(does, did)는 대(代)동사로 쓰이기도 하고, 도치문(주어와 동사의 순서가 바뀐 문장)을 만드는 데도 쓰인다.

iii) Do가 대동사로 쓰인 예

Jane studies English harder than Tarzan does.

원래의 문장은 Jane studies English harder than Tarzan studies English.가 되어야 하는데,

같은 말을 반복하면 입만 아프니까 studies English를 대신해서 does를 사용했다. 이때 사용된 does를 대(代)동사라고 한다.

iv) 도치문을 만드는데 do(does, did)동사가 사용되기도 한다.

I remember well what you did last summer. (나는 네가 지난여름에 한 일을 잘 기억하고 있다.)

위 문장에서 well을 강조하기 위해 문장의 맨 앞으로 보낼 수 있는데 이때 세금(?)을 내야 한다.

Well do I remember what you did last summer.

(나는 네가 지난여름에 한 일을 잘 기억하고 있다.)

만약 아무런 세금도 내지 않고 단어들이 마음대로 이동을 하면, 원래 문장이 그렇게 생긴 것인지,

이동을 해서 생긴 문장인지 알 수가 없다. 그래서 원래의 문장에서 어떤 단어가 이동을 하려면 세금(do)을 내야 하는 것이다.

여기에서 어순이 [조동사 + 주어 + (본)동사]가 된다는 점도 아울러 꼭 기억하자.

조동사와 관련해서 반드시 알아둬야 하는 사항이 있는데 정말 하늘이 두 쪽이 나도 이것만은 기억하도록 하자.

조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사(사전에 나오는 동사 그 모습 그대로!)를 쓴다.

아! 너무 중요해서 한 번 더 쓰겠다. 조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사를 써야 한다.

Tarzan didn't studied English hard.(X)

위에 있는 말도 안 되는 문장이 사실은 많은 학생들의 영작문 속에서 발견되는데

이건 전적으로 조동사의 '助'자도 모르기 때문에 그렇다. 다시 한번 기억하시라.

조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사(本동사)를 써야 한다는 사실을!

v) 또 한가지 do동사와 관련해서 중요한 것은 do는 언제나 조동사만으로 쓰이지는 않는다는 사실이다.

do가 당당히 독립을 해서 일반동사로 쓰일 수가 있다.

(일반동사에 충성을 맹세하던 조동사 do가 독립을 선언하는 순간입니다. 짝짝짝.)

위 문장에서 did 다음에 본동사가 없는데 이것은 바로 did가 일반동사이기 때문이다.

do는 일반동사로 쓰이면 '-을 하다' 정도의 뜻이 된다.

앞에서 예를 든 문장을 다시 한 번 살펴보면, I do remember what you did last summer. 에서 앞에서 폼을 잡고 있는 do는 조동사,

뒤에서 당당히 서 있는 did는 일반동사가 되는 것이다.

이해가 됐나요? 이해가 되었다면, YOU DID A GOOD JOB!!

앞에서 살펴본 조동사 do는 별다른 의미 없이 맹목적으로 본동사에게 충성을 바치고 있었는데

이제 지금부터 살펴볼 조동사는 나름의 의미를 가지고 본동사를 도와주고 있다.

이렇게 의미를 가지고 있는 조동사로는 can(could), may(might), must, will(would), shall( should) ought to, used to 등이 있다.

조동사의 과거형은 당연히 과거시제에서 또는 시제일치를 위해서 쓰인다.(시제일치는 지금은 그냥 넘어가도록...)

또한 특별한 이유 없이 조동사의 과거형이 쓰이는 경우가 있는데,

이 경우는 좀 더 공손한 표현이 되도록 하기 위한 장치에 불과하니까 왜 과거형을 썼을까하고 너무 고민하지 않으시길······.

조동사와 관련해서 반드시 알아둬야 하는 사항이 있는데 정말 하늘이 두 쪽이 나도 이것만은 기억하도록 하자.

조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사(사전에 나오는 동사 그 모습 그대로!)를 쓴다.

아! 너무 중요해서 한 번 더 쓰겠다. 조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사를 써야 한다.

Tarzan does studies English hard.(X)

Tarzan didn't studied English hard.(X)

Tarzan will to study English hard.(X)

I can speaking English.(X)

He can speaks English.(X)

위에 있는 말도 안 되는 문장이 사실은 많은 학생들의 영작문 속에서 발견되는데

이건 전적으로 조동사의 '助'자도 모르기 때문에 그렇다. 다시 한번 기억하시라.

조동사 다음에는 반드시 원형동사(本동사)를 써야 한다는 사실을!

v) 또 한가지 do동사와 관련해서 중요한 것은 do는 언제나 조동사만으로 쓰이지는 않는다는 사실이다.

do가 당당히 독립을 해서 일반동사로 쓰일 수가 있다.

(일반동사에 충성을 맹세하던 조동사 do가 독립을 선언하는 순간입니다. 짝짝짝.)

You did a good job! (잘 했어!)

위 문장에서 did 다음에 본동사가 없는데 이것은 바로 did가 일반동사이기 때문이다.

do는 일반동사로 쓰이면 '-을 하다' 정도의 뜻이 된다.

앞에서 예를 든 문장을 다시 한 번 살펴보면, I do remember what you did last summer. 에서 앞에서 폼을 잡고 있는 do는 조동사,

뒤에서 당당히 서 있는 did는 일반동사가 되는 것이다.

이해가 됐나요? 이해가 되었다면, YOU DID A GOOD JOB!!

앞에서 살펴본 조동사 do는 별다른 의미 없이 맹목적으로 본동사에게 충성을 바치고 있었는데

이제 지금부터 살펴볼 조동사는 나름의 의미를 가지고 본동사를 도와주고 있다.

이렇게 의미를 가지고 있는 조동사로는 can(could), may(might), must, will(would), shall( should) ought to, used to 등이 있다.

조동사의 과거형은 당연히 과거시제에서 또는 시제일치를 위해서 쓰인다.(시제일치는 지금은 그냥 넘어가도록...)

또한 특별한 이유 없이 조동사의 과거형이 쓰이는 경우가 있는데,

이 경우는 좀 더 공손한 표현이 되도록 하기 위한 장치에 불과하니까 왜 과거형을 썼을까하고 너무 고민하지 않으시길······.

1. Can(Could)
(1) 가능성

Even expert drivers can make mistakes. (전문적인 운전기사들도 실수를 할 수 있다.)

(2) 능력

Tarzan can play tennis, but Jane can't. (Tarzan은 테니스를 칠 수 있지만, Jane은 못 친다.)
(3) 허가

Can I come in? (들어가도 되나요?)
(4) 강한 의문과 부정(추측)

Can it be true? (그것이 사실일까?)

It cannot be true. (그것은 사실일 리가 없다.)

It cannot have been true. (그것은 사실이었을 리가 없다.)
(5) 관용적 표현

· cannot - too : 아무리 -해도 지나치지 않다.

You cannot be too careful to your health. (건강에 아무리 주의를 해도 지나치지 않다.)

· cannot but + 원형동사 : -하지 않을 수 없다.(= cannot help -ing)

I cannot but admit that he was right and I was wrong.

= I can't help admitting that he was right and I was wrong.

(나는 그가 옳았고 내가 틀렸다는 것을 인정하지 않을 수 없다.)

2. May(Might)
(1) 허가

May I use your pen? (펜을 써도 되나요?)
(2) 불확실한 추측과 가능성

The report may not be true. (그 보고서는 사실이 아닐 것이다.)
(3) 기원

May you live long! (오래 사시기를!)

May God bless him and keep him in safety in his wild and savage jungle!

(그에게 축복을 내려 주시고, 이 거칠고 야만적인 정글에서 그를 안전하게 해 주소서!)
(4) 양보

However hard you may try, you cannot finish the work.

(아무리 열심히 노력을 해도, 너는 그 일을 끝낼 수 없다.)
(5) 관용적 표현

· may well : -하는 것은 당연하다.

You may well say so. (네가 그렇게 말하는 것은 당연하다.)

· may(might) as well : -하는 것이 좋다.

You may as well go home now. (지금 집에 가는 것이 좋을 것이다.)

· might as well - as ··· : ···하느니 차라리 - 하는 편이 낫다.

You might as well expect a river to flow backward as ask him for money.

(그에게 돈을 부탁하느니 차라리 강물이 거꾸로 흐르는 것을 기대하는 편이 낫다.)

3. Must

(1) 필요·의무(= have to)

You must(= have to) see it. (너는 그것을 봐야만 한다.)
(2) 확실한 추측

He must be a thief. (그는 도둑임에 틀림없다.)

You must be in a hurry now. (지금 몹시 급하신 모양이네요.)

He must have been a thief. (그는 도둑이었음에 틀림없다.)

That must have been very exciting. (그것은 매우 흥미진진했음에 틀림없다.)

(3) must와 have to

i) must의 뜻은 have to로도 나타낼 수 있으며, 특히 과거와 미래 그리고 다른 조동사와 함께 쓰일 때는 have to를 써야 한다.

There were no buses so he had to walk. (버스가 없어서 그는 걸어야만 했다.)

You will have to come earlier tomorrow. (너는 내일 일찍 와야만 할 것이다.)
ii) must not은 '강한 금지'를 나타내고, don't have to는 '불필요(=need not)'를 나타낸다.

You must not take photos in the museum. 

(박물관에서 사진을 찍어서는 안 된다.)

You don't have to come.

(너는 올 필요가 없다.)
iii) must는 말하는 사람(화자)에 의해서 부과된 의무(개인적 견해)를, have to는

타인 또는 법이나 규칙 등에 의해 부과된 (외적인) 의무를 나타낸다는 차이가 있다.

You must wash your hands when you come in. (들어와서는 손을 씻어야만 한다.)

In many countries, men have to do military service.

(많은 나라에서 남자는 병역의 의무를 다해야 한다.)

4. Will
(1) 단순한 미래표현

I'll be twenty next year. (나는 내년에 20살이 된다.)
(2) 주어의 의지·의도

I will be there as soon as possible. (가능한 한 빨리 그곳에 가겠다.)

Tom will help you. (Tom이 너를 도울 것이다.)
(3) 현재의 고집

My hiccups won't stop. (딸꾹질이 영 멈추질 않아요.)
(4) 일반적인 경향·습성

A drowning man will catch at a straw. (물에 빠진 사람은 지푸라기라도 잡기 마련이다.)

(5) 현재의 습관적 동작

She will sit there for hours doing nothing.

(그녀는 하는 일없이 몇 시간이고 거기에 앉아 있곤 한다.)

(6) 가벼운 명령

You will wait here till I return. (내가 올 때까지 기다릴 거지!)

(7) 가벼운 추측

말하기 곤란할땐 이렇게

말하기 곤란할땐 이렇게.

상대방에게 말하기 곤란한 소식을 전할 때에는, 어떻게 말을 꺼내야 할지 망설여지기 마련이다.

이런 상황에서는 본론을 이야기하기 전에 상대방이 먼저 마음의 존비를 할 수 있도록 넌지시 운을 띄우는 것이 좋다.

내가 어렵게 이야기를 꺼내고 있다는 것을 표정으로 보이는 것 또한 중요하다.

표정이 장황한 말보다 더 효과적인 수단이 될 수도 있기 때문이다.

그럼 상대방에게 안 좋은 소식이나 말하기 곤란한 이야기를 전달하기에 앞서 '전주곡'과 같은 역할을 하는 표현들을 살펴보고, 각 표현의 의미와 뉘앙스에 따라 적절히 활용해 보자.
